After stirring under reflux for 4 hours, the reaction mixture was cooled, diluted with water and extracted with chloroform. The organic phase was washed with water, dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated. The residue was chromatographed over silica gel using chloroformmethanol (20:1, v/v) to give 1.35 g of 3-carboxymethyl-5-(3-fluoro-4-phenyl-α-methylbenzyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole as an oil. It was crystallized from diisopropyl ether to give colorless fine needles, m.p. 100.5°-101.5° C.
