Versuchsvorschrift

Diethyl malate was alkylated with ethyl iodide by following the alkylation method described by Example 12A to provide in 84% yield diethyl ethylmalate as an oil. The product was obtained as a mixture (87:13) of the diastereoisomers represented by the formulas ##STR93##
