(Non-Specific -- Poisonous Liquid, n.o.s.) Keep unnecessary people away; isolate hazard area and deny entry. Stay upwind; keep out of low areas. Ventilate closed spaces before entering them. Wear positive pressure breathing apparatus and special protective clothing. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing at the site. Move container from fire area if you can do so without risk. Fight fire from maximum distance. Dike fire control water for later disposal; do not scatter the material.

Use water spray, powder, foam, carbon dioxide. In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.

Safe StorageFireproof. Separated from strong oxidants, strong acids and strong bases.
Fire Fighting Procedures · 4 items

Powder, water spray, foam, carbon dioxide.

In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.

Suitable extinguishing media: For small (incipient) fires, use media such as "alcohol" foam, dry chemical, or carbon dioxide. For large fires, apply water from as far as possible. Use very large quantities (flooding) of water applied as a mist or spray; solid streams of water may be ineffective. Cool all affected containers with flooding quantities of water. ... Use water spray to cool unopened containers.

Special protective equipment for fire-fighters: Wear self contained breathing apparatus for fire fighting if necessary.

Storage Conditions · 2 items

Store in cool place. Keep container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place. Containers which are opened must be carefully resealed and kept upright to prevent leakage. Moisture sensitive.

Fireproof. Separated from strong oxidants, strong acids and strong bases.

Toxicology

Environmental Fate · 3 items

TERRESTRIAL FATE: Triethoxysilane is expected to undergo hydrolysis in the environment similar to most alkoxysilanes(1); a similar compound, trimethoxysilane, is reported to hydrolyze in aqueous conditions(2). The rapid hydrolysis indicates that absorption to soil and volatilization from moist soil will not be important environmental fate processes(SRC). Triethoxysilane is expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces(SRC) based upon a vapor pressure of 8.5 mm Hg at 25 °C(SRC) determined from a fragment constant method(3). Biodegradation data were not available(SRC, 2009).

AQUATIC FATE: Triethoxysilane is expected to undergo hydrolysis in the environment similar to most alkoxysilanes(1); a similar compound, trimethoxysilane, is reported to hydrolyze in aqueous conditions(2). The hydrolytic half-life of trimethoxysilane in water is 0.3 minutes at 2 °C and pH 7.0(3). The rapid hydrolysis indicates that absorption to suspended soils and sediments, volatilization from water and moist soil surfaces, and bioconcentration in aquatic organisms will not be important environmental fate processes(SRC). Biodegradation data were not available(SRC, 2009).

ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), triethoxysilane, which has an estimated vapor pressure of 8.5 mm Hg at 25 °C(SRC), determined from a fragment constant method(2) is expected to exist solely as a vapor in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase triethoxysilane is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC); the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be 21 hours(SRC), calculated from its rate constant of 1.9X10-11 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(SRC) that was derived using a structure estimation method(3). However, due to the hydrolysis of this compound with moisture in the atmosphere, photolysis in the atmosphere is not predicted to be an important mode of removal, and should be considered secondary to hydrolysis(SRC). Triethoxysilane does not contain chromophores that absorb at wavelengths >290 nm(4) and therefore is not expected to be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight(SRC).

Adverse EffectsOccupational hepatotoxin - Secondary hepatotoxins: the potential for toxic effect in the occupational setting is based on cases of poisoning by human ingestion or animal experimentation.
Exposure RoutesThe substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour.

Triethoxysilane is expected to undergo hydrolysis in the environment similar to most alkoxysilanes(1); a similar compound, trimethoxysilane, is reported to hydrolyze in aqueous conditions(2). The rapid hydrolysis indicates that adsorption to soil is not expected(SRC).

Human Toxicity Excerpts/SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS/ May be fatal if inhaled. Material is extremely destructive to the tissue of the mucous membranes and upper respiratory tract. May be harmful if absorbed through skin. Causes skin burns. Causes eye burns.

DescriptionTriethoxysilane is an organosilicon compound with the formula HSi(OC2H5)3. It is a colourless liquid used in precious metal-catalysed hydrosilylation reactions. The resulting triethoxysilyl groups are often valued for attachment to silica surfaces.Compared to most compounds with Si-H bonds, triethoxysilane exhibits relatively low reactivity. Like most silyl ethers, triethoxysilane is susceptible to hydrolysis. As reducing agent, triethoxysilane can for example be used in reduction of amides, reduction of carbonyl compounds in the presence of cobalt(II) chloride as catalyst, Cu-catalyzed reductive hydroxymethylation of styrenes, and Rh-catalyzed hydrodediazoniation.

UsesTriethoxysilane is useful reagent for the hydrosilylation of carbon–carbon multiple bonds; reducing agent for carbonyl groups

UsesTriethoxysilane is used in metal catalyzed hydrosilylation reactions.
