Health Hazards
SYMPTOMS: Exposure to this compound may result in skin irritation which is characterized by localized lesions, redness, swelling and itching. Chronic symptoms include loss of body weight, gastric irritation and moderate liver damage. Prolonged inhalation may cause acute pulmonary edema or chemical pneumonia. It also causes sensitization.
Hazards Summary
A tumorigen, mutagen, and primary irritant; [RTECS] A skin irritant and sensitizer; May cause loss of body weight, gastric irritation, and moderate liver damage; After inhalation may cause acute pulmonary edema; [CAMEO] An irritant; May cause skin sensitization; [MSDSonline]
Reactivity Profile
The neat compound, 1,2-EPOXYHEXADECANE, is sensitive to prolonged exposure to heat. It is also moisture sensitive. This material reacts with inorganic acids, thiosulfate, carboxylic acids, hydrogen cyanide, water, amines, aldehydes, alcohols, and caustics. It will also react with amino, hydroxyl and carboxyl groups. (NTP, 1992)

Safety & protection
First Aid
EYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop.
Nonfire Spill Response
SMALL SPILLS AND LEAKAGE: If a spill of this chemical occurs, FIRST REMOVE ALL SOURCES OF IGNITION, then you should dampen the solid spill material with acetone and transfer the dampened material to a suitable container. Use absorbent paper dampened with acetone to pick up any remaining material. Seal your contaminated clothing and the absorbent paper in a vapor-tight plastic bag for eventual disposal. Solvent wash all contaminated surfaces with acetone followed by washing with a soap and water solution. Do not reenter the contaminated area until the Safety Officer (or other responsible person) has verified that the area has been properly cleaned.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
RECOMMENDED RESPIRATOR: Where the neat test chemical is weighed and diluted, wear a NIOSH-approved half face respirator equipped with an organic vapor/acid gas cartridge (specific for organic vapors, HCl, acid gas and SO2) with a dust/mist filter. (NTP, 1992)
Toxicology
TSCA Test Submissions
Alpha-olefin epoxide C-16 was examined for mutagenic activity in Salmonella typhimurium tester strains TA98, TA100, TA1535, TA1537 and TA1538 with and without metabolic activation provided by Aroclor-induced rat liver S9 fraction. The test article was not mutagenic when administered by the plate incorporation method at five concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 10 mg/plate in the presence and absence of activation. Toxicity to cells was apparent at 10 mg/plate, both in the mutagenicity test and in a preliminary toxicity test.
The ability of tetradecyloxirane (TDO) to induce Sister Chromatid Exchange (SCE) in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells was evaluated both in the presence and absence of Aroclor-induced rat liver S9 metabolic activation. Based on preliminary toxicity tests, TDO, diluted with ethanol, was tested at concentrations of 0, 0.015, 0.025 or 0.04 mg/ml without activation and at concentrations of 0, 0.1, 0.15 or 2.0 mg/ml with activation. Twenty-five cells were examined per dose level. None of the concentrations tested with activation induced a statistically significant increase in the frequency of SCE relative to controls. The highest dose-level of TDO tested without activation induced a statistically significant increase in the frequency of SCE relative to controls when the data of two runs were combined and compared to the solvent controls (0.05 > p > 0.01, transformation of values according to a published conversion method), although the data from the individual runs was not significantly different from controls (p > 0.05).
