Unless specifically excluded, residues resulting from the use of the following substances as either an inert or an active ingredient in a pesticide chemical formulation, including antimicrobial pesticide chemicals, are exempted from the requirement of a tolerance under FFDCA section 408, if such use is in accordance with good agricultural or manufacturing practices. 2-Propanol is included on this list.

Based on the reviews of the generic data for the active ingredients ethanol and isopropanol, the Agency has sufficient information on the health effects and on their potential for causing adverse effects in fish and wildlife and the environment. The Agency has determined that ethanol and isopropanol products, labeled and used as specified in this Reregistration Eligibility Decision, will not pose unreasonable risks or adverse effects to humans or the environment. Therefore, the Agency concludes that products containing ethanol and isopropanol for all uses are eligible for reregistration.

As the federal pesticide law FIFRA directs, EPA is conducting a comprehensive review of older pesticides to consider their health and environmental effects and make decisions about their continued use. Under this pesticide reregistration program, EPA examines newer health and safety data for pesticide active ingredients initially registered before November 1, 1984, and determines whether the use of the pesticide does not pose unreasonable risk in accordance to newer saftey standards, such as those described in the Food Quality Protection Act of 1996. Pesticides for which EPA had not issued Registration Standards prior to the effective date of FIFRA '88 were divided into three lists based upon their potential for human exposure and other factors, with List B containing pesticides of greater concern than those on List C, and with List C containing pesticides of greater concern than those on List D. Isopropanol is found on List D. Case No: 4003; Pesticide type: insecticide, fungicide, herbicide, antimicrobial; Case Status: RED Approved 3/95; OPP has made a decision that some/all uses of the pesticide are eligible for reregistration, as reflected in a Reregistration Eligibility Decision (RED) document .; Active ingredient (AI): isopropanol; AI Status: OPP has completed a Reregistration Eligibility Decision (RED) for the case/AI.

ISOPROPANOL IS OXIDIZED, MORE SLOWLY THAN ETHANOL OR N-PROPANOL, TO ACETONE, & SOME 10% OF DOSE IS EXCRETED BY RABBITS AS GLUCURONIDE CONJUGATE OF ISOPROPANOL.

METABOLISM OF ETHANOL, PROPANOL, ISOPROPANOL, BUTANOL, ISOBUTANOL, SEC-BUTANOL, & TERT-BUTANOL WAS STUDIED AFTER ORAL ADMIN IN RABBITS. BLOOD PH WAS ON THE ACID SIDE WITH PROPANOL, BUTANOL, & ISOBUTANOL, AND ON THE ALKALINE SIDE WITH ISOPROPANOL & SEC-BUTANOL, BUT NO CHANGE WAS OBSERVED WITH ETHANOL & TERT-BUTANOL. BUTANOL & ISOBUTANOL HAD THE LOWEST RATE OF URINARY EXCRETION. ACETALDEHYDE AND ACETIC ACID WERE DETECTED AS THE URINARY METABOLITES OF ETHANOL AND PROPANOL, WHEREAS ISOBUTYRALDEHYDE & ISOVALERIC ACID WERE THE METABOLITES OF ISOBUTANOL.

Alcohol dehydrogenase oxidizes most isopropanol to acetone, which the lung or kidney slowly eliminates. Acetone probably is further metabolized to acetate, formate, and finally carbon dioxide.

Liver alcohol dehydrogonase (ADH) is the major enzyme involved in the oxidation of 2-propanol. ADH oxidizes most 2-propanol to acetone. Acetone then is eliminated from the kidney & expired air. It is estimated that 70-90% of ingested 2-propanol is metabolized to acetone. Acetone is probably further metabolized to acetate, formate & finally carbon dioxide. Conversion of acetone to acetic acid & formic acid may cause acidosis. Metabolism of 2-propanol leads to a shift in NAD/NADH ratio which may cause hypoglycemia.

The metabolism of isopropanol is via oxidation by aldehyde dehydrogenase (ADH) to acetone. In common with other alpha-substituted (secondary) alcohols, isopropanol is a relatively poor substrate for ADH. The primary metabolite, acetone, is eliminated in the expired air and in the urine and also undergoes further oxidation to acetate, formate and ultimately CO2.

2-propanol has known human metabolites that include (2S,3S,4S,5R)-3,4,5-Trihydroxy-6-propan-2-yloxyoxane-2-carboxylic acid.

UsesIsopropyl alcohol is an important chemical products and raw materials. It is mainly applied to various fields including pharmaceutical, cosmetics, plastics, fragrances, paint as well as being used as the dehydrating agent and cleaning agent in and electronics industry. It can also be used as the reagent for determination of barium, calcium, magnesium, nickel, potassium, sodium and strontium. It can also be used as the reference material of chromatographic analysis. In the manufacturing industry of circuit board, it is used as a cleaning agent, and the production of PCB holes for conductivity. Many people find that it can not only clean the motherboard with excellent performance, but also get the best results. In addition, it is used for other electronic devices, including cleaning disc cartridge, floppy disk drives, magnetic tape, and the laser tip of the disc driver of CD or DVD player. Isopropyl alcohol can also be used as the solvent of oil and gel as well as for the manufacture of fishmeal feed concentrate. Low-quality isopropanol can also be used in automotive fuels. As the raw material of production of acetone, the usage amount of isopropanol is reducing. There are several compounds which are synthesized from isopropanol, such as isopropyl ester, methyl isobutyl ketone, di-isopropylamine, di-isopropyl ether, isopropyl acetate, thymol and many kinds of esters. We can supply isopropanol of different quality depending on the end use it. The conventional quality of anhydrous isopropanol is more than 99%, while the special grade isopropanol content is higher than 99.8% (for flavors and drugs).

DescriptionIsopropanol is a clear, colorless alcohol that is used in the production of acetone and as a solvent in the manufacture of various industrial and commercial products. It is used by the public for a number of different purposes and is commonly known as rubbing alcohol. It is flammable and miscible with both water and many different organic solvents. Isopropanol can be prepared via three different methods: indirect hydration of propylene (the ‘strong acid’ method), direct hydration of propylene, and catalytic hydrogenation of acetone.

OccurrenceReported found in apple and cognac aromas (esterified). Also found in apple, banana, grapefruit and lime juice, melon, papaya, pear, onion, peas, rutabaga, tomato, wheat bread, cheeses, milk, boiled egg, cooked beef, pork and mutton, hop oil beer, rum, cocoa, coffee, scotch whiskey, grape wines, peanut, pecan, soybean, honey, beans, plum brandy, walnut, crab, clam, prickly pear and clary sage.
