Ethyl 1-benzyl-4-piperidinecarboxylate can be used to synthesize anti-inflammatory drug trypsin inhibitors, antagonizing inflammatory mediators at the receptor level. It can also be used to synthesize antitumor drugs such as matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors and farnesyltransferase inhibitors.
