Procedure
A solution of N,N-dibenzylethylenediamine (980 μL, 4.10 mmol) and triethylamine (1.03 mL, 7.38 mmol) in toluene (15 mL) was added dropwise to a solution of 2-bromopropionic acid ethyl ester (601 μL, 4.14 mmol) in toluene (15 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at 80° C. for 72 h. The reaction mixture was filtered through a pad of celite and solvent evaporated under reduced pressure to afford 1,4-dibenzylpiperazine-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (1.33 g, 3.93 mmol, 96%) as a yellow oil.
