Procedure
Acetyl chloride (1.06 mL, 14.9 mmol) followed by triethylamine (2.08 mL, 14.9 mmol) were added to a cooled 0° C. solution of 4-Bromo-2-ethyl-phenol (2.5 g, 12.4 mmol, from Step 1) dissolved in CH2Cl2. The reaction was stirred for 2 hrs and then partitioned between 1N HCl and EtOAc. The organic layer was washed with saturated NaHCO3, brine, dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated to a brown oil. The oil was purified by silica gel chromatography (0% to 10% EtOAc in hexanes) to give the title compound as a clear oil (2.44 g, 81%). 1H NMR (CDCl3): δ 1.19 (t, 3H, J=7.7 Hz), 2.32 (s, 3H), 2.52 (q, 2H, J=7.7 Hz), 6.89 (d, 1H, J=8.5 Hz), 7.32 (dd, 1H, J=8.5, 2.2 Hz), 7.38 (d, 1H, J=2.2 Hz).
