Procedure
To a solution of 10 g. of 2-(p-biphenylyl)-3,4-pentadien-2-ol in 200 ml. of anhydrous methanol is added 3 ml. of concentrated hydrochloric acid. The resulting mixture is stirred at room temperature for 3 hours and then in an ice bath for 2 hours. Solids form are are filtered off and recrystallized from pentane to obtain 2-(p-biphenylyl)-2-penten-4-one.
