Procedure

A mixture of 4-bromo-2,5-dichlorophenol (1.35 g, 5.58 mmol), adamantan-1-ylmethyl methanesulfonate (Fr. Demande, 2909090, May 30, 2008) (1.5 g, 6.14 mmol), and potassium carbonate (0.85 g, 6.14 mmol) in N,N-dilmethylformamide (10 mL) was stirred at 65° C. for 16 h and at 125° C. for 48 h. The reaction mixture was cooled down to ambient temperature, diluted with water (40 mL) and extracted with ethyl acetate (2×50 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with brine (50 mL), dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by column chromatography eluting with a 5% to 10% gradient of ethyl acetate in hexanes to afford 1-((4-bromo-2,5-dichlorophenoxy)methyl)adamantine as a colorless solid (1.7 g, 71%): MS (ES+) m/z 391.3 (M+1);
