Procedure
A mixture of 54.5 g. (0.364 mole) of sodium iodide and 40 g. (0.249 mole) of 1-chloro-trans-1-octen-3-one (Example 222) in 360 ml. of acetone is stirred and refluxed for 24 hours. The reaction mixture is cooled, filtered and concentrated. The residue is partitioned between water and ether. The organic phase is washed with dilute sodium bicarbonate solution, brine, dried (MgSO4) and evaporated to an oil. This material is used directly without purification.
