The volatiles were removed, water (15 mL) was added and the solution extracted with ethyl acetate (2×20 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with brine (15 mL), dried over sodium sulphate, and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford N-(4-(4-chloro-2-fluoro-3-methoxyphenyl)-5-(hydroxymethyl)pyridin-2-yl)acetamide (1.6 g, 1.88 mmol, 38% yield) as a brown solid. The compound was carried into the next step without further purification. LCMS (ESI) m/e 324.9 [(M+H)+, calcd for C15H15ClFN2O3 325.1]; LC/MS retention time (Method F): tR=0.97 min.
