Procedure
The trienone from (a) (1.3 gms) in ethanol (50 mls) was treated with 10% aqueous potassium hydroxide (0.5 ml) and 30% aqueous H2O2 (3 ml). After storage overnight at room temperature, the solution was diluted with water and the solid product collected. Recrystallization from aqueous methanol gave the title compound which after one further crystallization had melting point 162°-163°.
