Procedure

A solution of 4-cyano-2-hydroxymethylpyridine (0.5 g) in tetrahydrofuran (25 ml) was added dropwise over 20 minutes to a stirred mixture of lithium aluminium hydride (0.25 g) in tetrahydrofuran (30 ml) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. Wet tetrahydrofuran allowed by 0.35 ml of 16% w/w aqueous sodium hydroxide and water were added and the mixture was filtered. The filtrate was evaporated to give crude 4-aminomethyl-2-hydroxymethylpyridine (0.28 g).
