First Aid
EYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop.
Nonfire Spill Response
SMALL SPILLS AND LEAKAGE: If you should spill this chemical, use absorbent paper to pick up all liquid spill material. Seal the absorbent paper, as well as any of your clothing which may be contaminated, in a vapor-tight plastic bag for eventual disposal. Wash any surfaces you may have contaminated with a soap and water solution. Do not reenter the contaminated area until the Safety Officer (or other responsible person) has verified that the area has been properly cleaned.
Disposal Methods
SRP: At the time of review, criteria for land treatment or burial (sanitary landfill) disposal practices are subject to significant revision. Prior to implementing land disposal of waste residue (including waste sludge), consult with environmental regulatory agencies for guidance on acceptable disposal practices.
Preventive Measures
SRP: The scientific literature for the use of contact lenses in industry is conflicting. The benefit or detrimental effects of wearing contact lenses depend not only upon the substance, but also on factors including the form of the substance, characteristics and duration of the exposure, the uses of other eye protection equipment, and the hygiene of the lenses. However, there may be individual substances whose irritating or corrosive properties are such that the wearing of contact lenses would be harmful to the eye. In those specific cases, contact lenses should not be worn. In any event, the usual eye protection equipment should be worn even when contact lenses are in place.

Environmental Fate
TERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a recommended classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 10(SRC), determined from a structure estimation method(2), indicates that diethylene glycol diacrylate will have very high mobility in soil(SRC). Volatilization of diethylene glycol diacrylate may be important from moist soil surfaces(SRC) given an estimated Henry's Law constant of 9.5X10-10 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), using a recommended regression equation(3). Volatilization from dry soil surfaces(SRC) is not expected to be significant based on an estimated vapor pressure of 4.1X10-2 mm Hg(SRC), determined from a fragment constant method(4). Hydrolysis is expected to be a major fate process for this compound in moist soil(SRC). A base-catalyzed second-order rate constant of 3.7 l/mol-sec(SRC) was estimated using a structure estimation method(5); this corresponds to half-lives of 22 and 2 days at pH values of 7 and 8, respectively(5,SRC).
AQUATIC FATE: Based on a recommended classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 10(SRC), determined from a structure estimation method(2), indicates that diethylene glycol diacrylate should not adsorb to suspended solids and sediment in water(SRC). Diethylene glycol diacrylate is not expected to volatilize from water surfaces(1,SRC) based on an estimated Henry's Law constant of 9.5X10-10 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), developed using a fragment constant estimation method(3). According to a classification scheme(5), an estimated BCF value of 3(1,SRC), from an estimated log Kow(4,SRC), suggests that bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC). Hydrolysis is expected to be a major fate process for this compound in water(SRC). A base-catalyzed rate constant of 3.707 l/mol-sec(SRC) was estimated using a structure estimation method(6); this corresponds to half-lives of 22 and 2 days at pH values of 7 and 8, respectively(6,SRC).
ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), diethylene glycol diacrylate, which has an estimated vapor pressure of 4.1X10-2 mm Hg at 25 °C(2,SRC), may exist solely as a vapor in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase diethylene glycol diacrylate is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC); the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be about 20 hours(3,SRC).
Soil Adsorption/Mobility
Using a structure estimation method based on molecular connectivity indices(1), the Koc for diethylene glycol diacrylate can be estimated to be about 10(SRC). According to a recommended classification scheme(2), this estimated Koc value suggests that diethylene glycol diacrylate has very high mobility in soil(SRC).
TSCA Test Submissions
Diethylene glycol diacrylate (4074-88-8) was evaluated for developmental effects in groups of mice administered the test substance by gavage at dose levels of 0 (156 mice), 10 (33 mice), 20 (20 mice), 40 (43 mice), 60 (26 mice), and 80 (54 mice) mg/kg/day on days 6 through 15 of gestation. Animals were sacrificed on day 18 of gestation. Six of 54 dams died at 80 mg/kg/day. Average maternal weight gain was significantly lower than controls at 60 and 80 mg/kg/day (p<0.02). There was also a significant dose related trend toward increased liver weight at 40, 60 and 80 mg/kg/day (p<0.04). The 60 and 80 mg/kg/day groups displayed a significantly higher percentage (p<0.05 and p<0.0001, respectively) of malformed fetuses per litter than the control group. The Increased percentage of malformed fetuses per litter also showed a dose-related trend (p<0.001).
The mutagenicity of diethylene glycol diacrylate was evaluated in Salmonella tester strains TA98, TA100, TA1535, TA1537, and TA1538 (Ames test) both in the presence and absence of added metabolic activation by Aroclor-induced rat liver S9 fraction. Based on the results of preliminary bacterial toxicity determinations, ethylene glycol diacrylate was tested for mutagenicity at concentrations of 0.001, 0.005, 0.01, 0.1, 1.0, or 5.0 ul/plate by the direct plate incorportation method. Ethylene glycol diacrylate did not cause a positive response in any of the tester strains with or without metabolic activation.
The mutagenicity of diethylene glycol diacrylate was evaluated in yeast strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae (D4) both in the presence and absence of added metabolic activation by Aroclor-induced rat liver S9 fraction. Based on the results of preliminary bacterial toxicity determinations, ethylene glycol diacrylate was tested for mutagenicity at concentrations of 0.01, 0.1, 1.0, or 5.0 ul/plate by the direct plate incorportation method. Ethylene glycol diacrylate did not cause a positive response in any of the tester strains with or without metabolic activation.
Environmental Bioconcentration
An estimated BCF value of 3 was calculated for diethylene glycol diacrylate(SRC), using an estimated log Kow of 0.84(1,SRC) and a recommended regression-derived equation(2). According to a classification scheme(3), this BCF value suggests that bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC).
Volatilization from Water/Soil
The Henry's Law constant for diethylene glycol diacrylate is estimated as 9.5X10-10 atm-cu m/mole(SRC) using a fragment constant estimation method(1). This value indicates that diethylene glycol diacrylate will be essentially nonvolatile from water surfaces(2,SRC). Diethylene glycol diacrylate's estimated values for vapor pressure, 4.1X10-2 mm Hg(3,SRC) and Henry's Law constant(1,SRC) indicate that volatilization from dry and moist soil surfaces should not occur(SRC).
Non-Human Toxicity Excerpts
It is severely injurious to the eyes of rabbits, being capable of causing severe corneal damage (rated 9 on a scale of 10). It is markedly irritating to rabbit skin, being rated 5 on a scale of 10. It is very toxic from skin absorption ... .
Probably because of its very low volatility, it appears to be low in toxicity from inhalation, for rats exposed for 8 hr to an essentially saturated atmosphere, presumably generated at room temperatures, were not seriously affected.
Environmental Abiotic Degradation
The rate constant for the vapor-phase reaction of diethylene glycol diacrylate with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals has been estimated as 5.0X10-11 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(SRC) using a structure estimation method(1,SRC). This corresponds to an atmospheric half-life of about 20 hours at an atmospheric concentration of 5X10+5 hydroxyl radicals per cu cm(1,SRC). A base-catalyzed rate constant of 3.707 l/mol-sec(SRC) was estimated using a structure estimation method(2); this corresponds to half-lives of 22 and 2 days at pH values of 7 and 8, respectively(2,SRC).
Probable Routes of Human Exposure
Occupational exposure to diethylene glycol diacrylate during its production or use in the manufacture of other products may be through respiratory and dermal routes(SRC). The general population may be exposed to this compound through its use as a radiation cure(1) or through contact with products containing diethylene glycol diacrylate(SRC).
Environmental Fate/Exposure Summary
Diethylene glycol diacrylate's production and use as a radiation cure for UV, beta, and gamma radiation and its use in coatings or adhesive fields may result in its release to the environment through various waste streams. If released to the atmosphere, diethylene glycol diacrylate may exist solely in the vapor phase in the ambient atmosphere, based on an estimated vapor pressure of 4.1X10-2 mm Hg at 25 °C. Vapor-phase diethylene glycol diacrylate is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals with a half-life of about 20 hours. An estimated Koc value of 10 suggests that diethylene glycol diacrylate will have very high mobility in soil. Volatilization from dry soil surfaces is not expected to be significant based on the estimated vapor pressure of this compound. Volatilization from moist soil surfaces is not expected given an estimated Henry's Law constant of 9.5X10-10 atm-cu m/mole. Hydrolysis is expected to be a major fate process for this compound in both aquatic systems and moist soil; estimated half-lives of 22 and 2 days were calculated for diethylene glycol diacrylate at pH values of 7 and 8, respectively. In water, diethylene glycol diacrylate is not expected to adsorb to sediment or particulate matter based on its Koc value. This compound should not volatilize from water surfaces given its estimated Henry's Law constant. Bioconcentration in aquatic organisms should be low based on an estimated BCF value of 3. The major routes of occupational and general population exposure to diethylene glycol diacrylate should be inhalation and skin absorption. (SRC)
