Material is extremely destructive to the mucous membranes, upper respiratory tract, eyes, and skin. Symptoms of exposure include burning sensation, coughing, wheezing, laryngitis, shortness of breath, headache, nausea, and vomiting. (USCG, 1999)
· TOXIC and/or CORROSIVE; inhalation, ingestion or contact (skin, eyes) with vapors, dusts or substance may cause severe injury, burns or death.
Hazards Summary
Dimethylcarbamoyl chloride is used as an intermediate in the production of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and dyes. Acute (short-term) inhalation exposure to dimethylcarbamoyl chloride has been observed to result in damaged mucous membranes of the nose, throat, and lungs, and cause difficulty in breathing in rats. No information is available on the chronic (long-term), reproductive, developmental, or carcinogenic health effects of dimethylcarbamoyl chloride in humans. Nasal tract carcinomas have been observed in rats and male hamsters following inhalation exposure. EPA has not classified dimethylcarbamoyl chloride for potential carcinogenicity.
Liquid causes second or third degree burns after short contact. [CHRIS] A lachrymator; Inhalation exposure to HCl may cause chemical pneumonitis; [HSDB] DMCC reacts with tissue at the point of contact. DMCC hydrolyzes to dimethylamine, CO2, and HCl. Animals in feeding studies develop liver hemorrhages. Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed by inhalation 6 hours/day, 5 days/week for 6 weeks at 0.5, 1.0, or 2.0 ppm DMCC in an exposure chamber and held without further exposure for up to 2 years. A dose-response relationship for both the development of morphological lesions and for tumor incidences of the nasal cavity and nasopharyngeal areas was seen, ranging from 89% tumor incidence at 2 ppm to 4% incidence at 0.5 ppm. No tumors in these regions were reported in the controls. [ACGIH]

Storage Conditions
PRECAUTIONS FOR "CARCINOGENS": Storage site should be as close as practical to lab in which carcinogens are to be used, so that only small quantities required for ... expt need to be carried. Carcinogens should be kept in only one section of cupboard, an explosion-proof refrigerator or freezer (depending on chemicophysical properties ...) that bears appropriate label. An inventory ... should be kept, showing quantity of carcinogen & date it was acquired ... Facilities for dispensing ... should be contiguous to storage area. /Chemical Carcinogens/
Cleanup Methods
PRECAUTIONS FOR "CARCINOGENS": A high-efficiency particulate arrestor (HEPA) or charcoal filters can be used to minimize amt of carcinogen in exhausted air ventilated safety cabinets, lab hoods, glove boxes or animal rooms ... Filter housing that is designed so that used filters can be transferred into plastic bag without contaminating maintenance staff is avail commercially. Filters should be placed in plastic bags immediately after removal ... The plastic bag should be sealed immediately ... The sealed bag should be labelled properly ... Waste liquids ... should be placed or collected in proper containers for disposal. The lid should be secured & the bottles properly labelled. Once filled, bottles should be placed in plastic bag, so that outer surface ... is not contaminated ... The plastic bag should also be sealed & labelled. ... Broken glassware ... should be decontaminated by solvent extraction, by chemical destruction, or in specially designed incinerators. /Chemical Carcinogens/
Disposal Methods
Generators of waste (equal to or greater than 100 kg/mo) containing this contaminant, EPA hazardous waste number U097, must conform with USEPA regulations in storage, transportation, treatment and disposal of waste.
A potential candidate for rotary kiln incineration at a temperature range of 820 to 1,600 °C and residence times of seconds for liquids and gases, and hours for solids. A potential candidate for fluidized bed incineration at a temperature range of 450 to 980 °C and residence times of seconds for liquids and gases, and longer for solids.
PRECAUTIONS FOR "CARCINOGENS": There is no universal method of disposal that has been proved satisfactory for all carcinogenic compounds & specific methods of chem destruction ... published have not been tested on all kinds of carcinogen-containing waste. ... Summary of avail methods & recommendations ... /given/ must be treated as guide only. /Chemical Carcinogens/
PRECAUTIONS FOR "CARCINOGENS": ... Incineration may be only feasible method for disposal of contaminated laboratory waste from biological expt. However, not all incinerators are suitable for this purpose. The most efficient type ... is probably the gas-fired type, in which a first-stage combustion with a less than stoichiometric air:fuel ratio is followed by a second stage with excess air. Some ... are designed to accept ... aqueous & organic-solvent solutions, otherwise it is necessary ... to absorb soln onto suitable combustible material, such as sawdust. Alternatively, chem destruction may be used, esp when small quantities ... are to be destroyed in laboratory. /Chemical Carcinogens/

Preventive Measures
THE PROCESSES SHOULD ... TAKE PLACE IN WELL VENTILATED PREMISES UNDER A SLIGHT NEGATIVE PRESSURE TO AVOID ANY DIFFUSION OF POLLUTANTS. THE PROCESS PLANT SHOULD BE EQUIPPED WITH LOCAL EXHAUST DEVICES, IN PARTICULAR AT FLANGES, VALVES, ETC, WHERE LEAKS ARE MORE LIKELY TO ARISE.
PRECAUTIONS FOR "CARCINOGENS": Smoking, drinking, eating, storage of food or of food & beverage containers or utensils, & the application of cosmetics should be prohibited in any laboratory. All personnel should remove gloves, if worn, after completion of procedures in which carcinogens have been used. They should ... wash ... hands, preferably using dispensers of liq detergent, & rinse ... thoroughly. Consideration should be given to appropriate methods for cleaning the skin, depending on nature of the contaminant. No standard procedure can be recommended, but the use of organic solvents should be avoided. Safety pipettes should be used for all pipetting. /Chemical Carcinogens/
PRECAUTIONS FOR "CARCINOGENS": In animal laboratory, personnel should remove their outdoor clothes & wear protective suits (preferably disposable, one-piece & close-fitting at ankles & wrists), gloves, hair covering & overshoes. ... clothing should be changed daily but ... discarded immediately if obvious contamination occurs ... /also,/ workers should shower immediately. In chemical laboratory, gloves & gowns should always be worn ... however, gloves should not be assumed to provide full protection. Carefully fitted masks or respirators may be necessary when working with particulates or gases, & disposable plastic aprons might provide addnl protection. If gowns are of distinctive color, this is a reminder that they should not be worn outside of lab. /Chemical Carcinogens/
PRECAUTIONS FOR "CARCINOGENS": ... Operations connected with synth & purification ... should be carried out under well-ventilated hood. Analytical procedures ... should be carried out with care & vapors evolved during ... procedures should be removed. ... Expert advice should be obtained before existing fume cupboards are used ... & when new fume cupboards are installed. It is desirable that there be means for decreasing the rate of air extraction, so that carcinogenic powders can be handled without ... powder being blown around the hood. Glove boxes should be kept under negative air pressure. Air changes should be adequate, so that concn of vapors of volatile carcinogens will not occur. /Chemical Carcinogens/

Environmental Fate
TERRESTRIAL FATE: If dimethylcarbamoyl chloride is released to soil, it will be expected to rapidly hydrolyze if the soil is moist, based upon a half-life of 54 sec at 14 °C(SRC) calculated from a measured hydrolysis rate constant(1). Since it rapidly hydrolyzes, adsorption to and volatilization from moist soil are not expected to be significant processes, although no data specifically regarding the fate of dimethylcarbamoyl chloride in soil were located(SRC). The potential for volatilization of dimethylcarbamoyl chloride from dry soil surfaces may exist(SRC) based upon a vapor pressure of 1.95 mm Hg(2). Biodegradation should not be an important process since hydrolysis is such a rapid process(SRC).
AQUATIC FATE: If dimethylcarbamoyl chloride is released to water, it will be expected to rapidly hydrolyze, based upon a half-life of 54 sec at 14 °C(SRC) calculated from a measured hydrolysis rate constant(1). The products of hydrolysis are dimethylamine, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen chloride(2). Since it rapidly hydrolyzes, bioconcentration, volatilization, and adsorption to sediment and suspended solids are not expected to be significant processes(SRC). No data were located concerning biodegradation, but dimethylcarbamoyl chloride probably abiotically degrades via hydrolysis significantly faster than via biodegradation(SRC).
ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), dimethylcarbamoyl chloride, which has a vapor pressure of 1.95 mm Hg at 25 °C(2), is expected to exist solely as a vapor in the ambient atmosphere(SRC). Vapor-phase dimethylcarbamoyl chloride is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC); the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be 24 hours(SRC), calculated from its rate constant of 16X10-12 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(SRC) determined using a structure estimation method(3). The hydrolysis half-life for dimethylcarbamoyl chloride is 54 sec(SRC), calculated from its rate constant of 12.76X10-3 sec-1(4), which suggests that vapor-phase dimethylcarbamoyl chloride will rapidly hydrolyze in fog and rain(SRC).
