· Produce flammable gases on contact with water.;· May ignite on contact with water or moist air.;· Some react vigorously or explosively on contact with water.;· May be ignited by heat, sparks or flames.;· May re-ignite after fire is extinguished.;· Some are transported in highly flammable liquids.;· Runoff may create fire or explosion hazard.
Combustible. Risk of fire and explosion on contact with acids, alcohol, oxidizing agents or water.
Fire Potential
Moderate, when exposed to heat or flame or by chemical reaction with oxidizers.
Supports combustion
Health Hazards
Solid irritates skin. If ingested can form large volume of gas and lead to a gas embolism. (USCG, 1999)
· Inhalation or contact with vapors, substance or decomposition products may cause severe injury or death.;· May produce corrosive solutions on contact with water.;· Fire will produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases.;· Runoff from fire control or dilution water may cause environmental contamination.
Reactivity Profile
SODIUM BOROHYDRIDE is a powerful reducing agent. A chemical base. Absorbs moisture readily forming caustic solution. which attacks aluminum and zinc. A violent polymerization of acetaldehyde results from the reactions of acetaldehyde with alkaline materials such as sodium hydroxide. Calcium oxide or sodium hydroxide react with phosphorus pentaoxide extremely violently when initiated by local heating [Mellor 8 Supp.3:406 (1971]. Using potassium hydroxide to dry impure tetrahydrofuran, which contains peroxides, may be hazardous. Explosions have occurred in the past. Sodium hydroxide behaves in a similar way as potassium hydroxide [NSC Newsletter, Chem. Soc. 1967]. Ignition occurs if a mixture of the hydride and sulfuric acid is not cooled. Contact of glycerol and sodium borohydride leads to ignition, other glycols and methanol are exothermic but do not ignite.
Chemical Dangers
Decomposes on heating and on contact with acids, powdered metals, water and moisture. This produces flammable/explosive gas (hydrogen - see ICSC 0001). The substance is a strong reducing agent. It reacts violently with oxidants. This generates fire and explosion hazard.

Disposal Methods
SRP: The most favorable course of action is to use an alternative chemical product with less inherent propensity for occupational exposure or environmental contamination. Recycle any unused portion of the material for its approved use or return it to the manufacturer or supplier. Ultimate disposal of the chemical must consider: the material's impact on air quality; potential migration in soil or water; effects on animal, aquatic, and plant life; and conformance with environmental and public health regulations.
Spillage Disposal
Remove all ignition sources. Personal protection: chemical protection suit and particulate filter respirator adapted to the airborne concentration of the substance. Sweep spilled substance into covered dry, plastic containers. Carefully collect remainder. Then store and dispose of according to local regulations.
Preventive Measures
Obvious industrial hygiene recommendations /include/ (1) sodium borohydride is flammable and exothermic in presence of moisture and should be handled with special care to prevent serious burns, and (2) measures should be taken to prevent workers from ocular, cutaneous, or inhalation exposures ...
SRP: Contaminated protective clothing should be segregated in such a manner so that there is no direct personal contact by personnel who handle, dispose, or clean the clothing. Quality assurance to ascertain the completeness of the cleaning procedures should be implemented before the decontaminated protective clothing is returned for reuse by the workers. Contaminated clothing should not be taken home at end of shift, but should remain at employee's place of work for cleaning.
SRP: The scientific literature for the use of contact lenses in industry is conflicting. The benefit or detrimental effects of wearing contact lenses depend not only upon the substance, but also on factors including the form of the substance, characteristics and duration of the exposure, the uses of other eye protection equipment, and the hygiene of the lenses. However, there may be individual substances whose irritating or corrosive properties are such that the wearing of contact lenses would be harmful to the eye. In those specific cases, contact lenses should not be worn. In any event, the usual eye protection equipment should be worn even when contact lenses are in place.
If material not on fire and not involved in fire: Do not use water. Keep sparks, flames, and other sources of ignition away. Keep out of water sources and sewers. Keep material dry. Do not attempt to sweep up dry material.

Environmental Fate/Exposure Summary
Inorganic boron compounds (with the exception of hydroboranes) are expected to be nonvolatile and will exist solely in the particulate phase in the ambient atmosphere. Particulate-phase boron compounds will be removed from the atmosphere by wet and dry deposition. The chemistry of boron is dominated by its tendency to form stable bonds with electronegative atoms, especially oxygen. Reduced boron compounds (halides, hydrides, alkyls and aryls) tend to oxidize and hydrolyze readily, and would be expected to be converted into various boron-oxide compounds in the environment. Inorganic boron compounds are nonvolatile and would not be expected to volatilize from moist or dry soil surfaces. Since the adsorption of boron is expected to be most significant for soils that contain high concentrations of amorphous aluminum and iron oxides and hydroxides, sediments with these characteristics may also strongly adsorb boron compounds. (SRC)
Antidote and Emergency Treatment
Maintain an open airway and assist ventilation if nescessary. treat coma, seizures, hypotension, and renal failure if they occur. There is no specific antidote. Administer activated charcoal (although boric acid is not well absorbed). Consider gastric lavage for large ingestions. /Boric acid, Borates, and Boron/
Hemodialysis is effective and is indicated after massive ingestions and for supportive care of renal failure. Peritoneal dialysishas not proved effective in enhancing elimination in infants. /Boric acid, Borates, and Boron/
In acute poisonings, if a large amount has been ingested and the patient is seen within one hour of exposure, gastrointestinal decontamination should be considered ... .It is important to keep in mind that vomiting and diarrhea are common, and severe poisoning may be associated with seizures. Therefore induction of emesis by syrup of ipecac is probably contraindicated in these exposures. Catharsis is not indicated if diarrhea is present. /Boric acid and Borates/
If ingestion of borate has been massive (several grams), or has extended over several days, administer intravenous glucose and electrolyte solutions to sustain urinary excretion of borate. Monitor fluid balance and serum electrolytes (including bicarbonate capacity ) regularly. Monitor cardiac status by ECG. Test the urine for proteins and cells to detect renal injury, and monitor serum concentration of borate. Metabolic acidosis may be treated with sodium bicarbonate. If shock develops, it may be necessary to infuse plasma or whole blood. Administer oxygen continuously. If oliguria (less than 25 to 30 mL urine per hour) occurs, intravenous fluids must be slowed or stopped to avoid overloading the circulation. Such patients should be referred to a center capable of providing intensive care for critically ill patients. /Boric acid and Borates/
