As the federal pesticide law FIFRA directs, EPA is conducting a comprehensive review of older pesticides to consider their health and environmental effects and make decisions about their continued use. Under this pesticide reregistration program, EPA examines newer health and safety data for pesticide active ingredients initially registered before November 1, 1984, and determines whether the use of the pesticide does not pose unreasonable risk in accordance to newer saftey standards, such as those described in the Food Quality Protection Act of 1996. Pesticides for which EPA had not issued Registration Standards prior to the effective date of FIFRA '88 were divided into three lists based upon their potential for human exposure and other factors, with List B containing pesticides of greater concern than those on List C, and with List C containing pesticides of greater concern than those on List D. Tetrasodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate is found on List D. Case No: 4036; Pesticide type: insecticide, fungicide, herbicide, antimicrobial; Case Status: None of the active ingredients in the case are being supported for reregistration by their registrants. All are unsupported, or some are unsupported and some are cancelled. Cases described as "unsupported" generally are being processed for cancellation.; Active ingredient (AI): tetrasodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate; AI Status: Registrants of the pesticide have not made or honored a commitment to seek reregistration, conduct the necessary studies, or pay the requisite fees, or they have asked EPA to cancel their product registrations. First Aid Measures
Fresh air, rest.
Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then refer for medical attention.
Rinse mouth. Refer for medical attention .
Disposal Methods
SRP: The most favorable course of action is to use an alternative chemical product with less inherent propensity for occupational exposure or environmental contamination. Recycle any unused portion of the material for its approved use or return it to the manufacturer or supplier. Ultimate disposal of the chemical must consider: the material's impact on air quality; potential migration in soil or water; effects on animal, aquatic, and plant life; and conformance with environmental and public health regulations.
Spillage Disposal
Personal protection: particulate filter respirator adapted to the airborne concentration of the substance. Sweep spilled substance into covered containers. If appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Wash away remainder with plenty of water.
Preventive Measures
SRP: The scientific literature for the use of contact lenses by industrial workers is inconsistent. The benefits or detrimental effects of wearing contact lenses depend not only upon the substance, but also on factors including the form of the substance, characteristics and duration of the exposure, the uses of other eye protection equipment, and the hygiene of the lenses. However, there may be individual substances whose irritating or corrosive properties are such that the wearing of contact lenses would be harmful to the eye. In those specific cases, contact lenses should not be worn. In any event, the usual eye protection equipment should be worn even when contact lenses are in place.

Human Toxicity Excerpts
/HUMAN EXPOSURE STUDIES/ Tetrasodium edetate used in dust as sequestering agent should not be applied to eye unless first neutralized, because it forms solution sufficiently alkaline to be injurious to eye.
/SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS/ Rapid intravenous administration of Na2EDTA causes hypocalcemic tetany. However, a slow infusion (15 mg per minute) administered to a normal individual elicits no symptoms of hypocalcemia because of the ready availability of extracirculatory stores of calcium.
/CASE REPORTS/ A 75-year-old man being treated for several malignant epithelial tumors was prescribed a sunscreen Uriage SPF50+ cream. After 10 months of using the product, the patient presented with eczematous areas where the sunscreen had been applied (face, neck and back of hands). Patch testing was performed with standard series of GEIDAC (Spanish Contact Dermatitis and Cutaneous Allergy Research Group), sunscreen series (Chemotechnique Diagnostics, Malmo, Sweden) and the Uriage SPF50+ cream. After 4 days, a positive reaction was observed to the cream (++). The manufacturer supplied the individual ingredients of their product. Out of the 24 components provided, only tetrasodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) 0.2% aqua was positive and it was negative in five controls subjects. ... In our patient, there was a close relation between the application of the sunscreen and the appearance of eczema. Positive patch test was only obtained with 0.2% aqua tetrasodium EDTA as a component of the sunscreen, whereas ethylenediamine was negative. His eczema resolved once the sunscreen ceased to be used. He is now using a mineral-based product without EDTA.

Non-Human Toxicity Excerpts
/LABORATORY ANIMALS: Acute Exposure/ Based on limited experimental data and lack of reports of skin and respiratory sensitisation during industrial use of edetic acid and Na4EDTA, the /investigators/ conclude that both edetic acid and Na4EDTA do not cause sensitisation by skin contact or by inhalation. Based on the positive results with the Magnusson-Klingman test, the CSTEE concludes that edetic acid salts may be weak skin sensitizers.
/LABORATORY ANIMALS: Acute Exposure/ Not irritating to skin of rabbits. Irritating to rabbit eyes.
/LABORATORY ANIMALS: Acute Exposure/ Trilon b at 200-400 mg/kg caused tetanic convulsions and death of rabbits and mice.
/LABORATORY ANIMALS: Subchronic or Prechronic Exposure/ When administered in drinking water to white mice, EDTA ... and, Tetrasodium EDTA ... produced changes in the mineral content of the tissues. EDTA was administered at a concentration of 3.4 mM (due to its low solubility in water) and the salts were administered at concentrations of 25 mM. The mineral content of bones, kidneys, liver, and muscles was determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. ... After treatment with Tetrasodium EDTA, calcium was reduced in bone, liver, and muscle; zinc was reduced in the kidneys, muscle, and liver; and magnesium was reduced in bone and liver. ... Mice given EDTA had increased muscle calcium; and mice treated with Tetrasodium EDTA had increased renal magnesium. Similar results were /previously/ reported after oral administration of 1 mmol/kg/day EDTA for 35 days in a study using 42 male Wistar rats.

Methods of Manufacturing
Tetrasodium EDTA was formed by reacting a basic solution of ethylenediamine with formaldehyde and sodium or hydrogen cyanide, followed by hydrolysis to form the salt. It can also be produced by using excess sodium hydroxide in the reaction. The intermediate ethylenediaminetetracetonitrile can be isolated and hydrolyzed ... in a separate step. It was supplied either in anhydrous form or hydrated with two molecules of water per molecule of the salt.

A number of salts of EDTA are available with uses identical or similar to the acid. The USP salts are called edetates (calcium disodium, disodium edetates); others are usually abbreviated to EDTA (tetrasodium, trisodium EDTA). Other salts, known chiefly under trademark names, are the sodium ferric, dihydrogen ferrous and a range of disodium salts with magnesium, divalent cobalt, manganese, copper, zinc, and nickel.
Historical data (data submitted to the FDA in 1984) indicated that EDTA and Tetrasodium EDTA were used typically at concentrations up to 1%, but one formulation each contained concentrations of 25%.
It has been estimated that daily human consumption of EDTA salts are 1.5 x 10-4 for Tetrasodium EDTA.
