2.6 g (0.07 mol) of sodium borohydride was added gradually to a solution of 30 g (0.14 mol) of 7-ethoxy-1,1,1-trifluoro-2-heptanone in 200 ml of ethanol at 0° C. The solution was stirred for 24 hours at room temperature. 200 ml of water was added and extracted with diethyl ether. The organic layer was washed with a small amount of water, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated. The residue was distilled under the reduced pressure, to obtain 28 g of racemic 7-ethoxy-1,1,1-trifluoro-2-heptanol. Boiling point; 133-137° C. (50 mmHg).
