A solution of 173 mg (0.35 mmol) of tert-butyl (3RS,4RS)-4-(3-bromophenyl)-3-(naphthalen-2-ylmethoxy)-piperidine-1-carboxylate in 6 ml of methanol was treated with 6 ml of a 2 N solution of hydrogen chloride in MeOH and stirred at 50° C. for 4 hours. Subsequently, the mixture was partitioned between ethyl acetate and a 5% sodium hydrogen carbonate solution, the organic phase was dried over magnesium sulphate and finally the solvent was removed under reduced pressure. The crude product was purified by chromatography on silica gel with a 10:1:0.1 mixture of methylene chloride, MeOH and 25% ammonia and the eluent. There were obtained 126 mg (91% of theory) of (3RS,4RS)-4-(3-bromophenyl)-3-(naphthalen-2-ylmethoxy)-piperidine as a light yellow oil. MS: 396, 398 (M+H)+.
