56.2 g (0.4 mol) of 4-chlorobenzaldehyde were added dropwise to a solution of 18.4 g (0.4 mol) of methylhydrazine in 100 ml of ethanol. The mixture was then refluxed for 4 hours. After cooling, the reaction mixture was concentrated. The residue was taken up in methyl tert-butyl ether. The ether phase was finally washed with water, dried over magnesium sulfate and then concentrated. Yield: 97%.
