Procedure
3-(3-Benzyloxypropyl)pyridine (34.28 g) was dissolved in acetic acid (260 ml), followed by -the addition of a 30% aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide (52 ml), and the mixture was stirred at 50° C. overnight. After cooling as it was, water (52 ml) was added to the reaction solution, which was then evaporated. The resulting residue was dissolved in chloroform, washed with water, dried (over MgSO4) and evaporated. The resulting residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (methylene chloride/methanol system), to give the title compound as a yellow oil (30.23 g, yield; 88%).
