Procedure

Crude N-(2,3-dimyristyloxypropyl)phthalimide 4 (20.0 g, 25.0 mmol) was dissolved in ethanol (300 ml). Hydrazine monohydrate (20 ml, 412.3 mmol) was added and the reaction was left to reflux overnight. The ethanol was removed on the rotary evaporator and the residue was redissolved in chloroform (200 ml). The precipitate was filtered off and the chloroform was removed on the rotary evaporator. TLC (10% MeOH—CHCl3, developed in Molybdate) indicated that most of the starting material had reacted to form product. This resulting product was further purified by flash column chromatography (0-5% MeOH—CHCl3) to yield 10.4 g (89.7% over three steps from 1,2-dimyristyloxypropan-3-ol 2) of 1,2-dimyristyloxypropylamine 5.
