A slurry of N-[2-methyl-4-(methyloxy)-5-nitrophenyl]acetamide (1 g, 4.46 mmol) in methanol (20 ml) and 4M HCl in dioxane (8.92 ml, 35.7 mmol) was heated at 60° C. for 18 h. The reaction mixture was cooled in an ice bath and solids were filtered and washed with cold methanol to afford 2-methyl-4-(methyloxy)-5-nitroaniline HCl salt (0.516 g, 2.36 mmol) as a white solid. 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ ppm 2.38 (s, 3 H) 3.91 (s, 3 H) 7.31 (s, 1 H) 7.87 (s, 1 H) 9.39 (br. s., 2 H)
