Iodine (187 mg, 0.74 mmol) was added to a solution of triphenylphosphine (194 mg, 0.74 mmol) and imidazole (49 mg, 0.74 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (1.5 mL) at 23° C. After 0.5 h a solution of methyl 5-(3-hydroxypropyl)thiophene-2-carboxylate 7 (123 mg, 0.62 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (0.5 mL) was added. After stirring for 2 h the reaction was concentrated in vacuo and the residue was purified by FCC (silica gel, 7:3 hex/EtOAc) to provide 170 mg (89%) of the iodide 108.
