EX-576A) A solution of 3-aminobenzonitrile (1.06 g, 9.1 mmol) and 3-(1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethoxy)benzaldehyde (2.00 g, 9.01 mmol) was dissolved in 25 mL of dichloroethane and acetic acid (536 mL, 9.37 mmol), then solid NaBH(OAc)3 (2.48 g, 11.7 mmol) was added. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours, then quenched with water and extracted with dichloromethane. The organic layer was washed with saturated NaHCO3, then dried over MgSO4, and evaporated. The crude product was purified by MPLC on silica gel eluting with 20% to 30% ethyl acetate in hexane to give 1.58 g (54%) of the desired 3-[[[3-(1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethoxy)phenyl]methyl]amino]benzonitrile product as a clear oil. 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ4.38 (s, 3H), 5.89 (dt, 1H), 6.79 (t, 1H), 6.98 (d, 2H), 7.12-7.28 (m, 4H), 7.40(t, 1H).
