Procedure

To a solution of 5-(2-adamantan-1-yl-ethyl)-1-methyl-2-o-tolyl-1H-imidazole-4-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (397 mg, 0.98 mmol) in ethanol (30 ml) was added 2.0M potassium hydroxide solution (3.4 ml). The solution was heated at reflux for 16 h, cooled to 50° C. and acidified (1M hydrochloric acid, pH=3-4). The ethanol was evaporated, the residue was diluted with water (30 ml) and the product was extracted with DCM. The organic layer was dried (MgSO4) and the solvent was evaporated to afford the product as a white solid (351 mg, 95%). 1H NMR (300MHz, CDCl3) 7.41-7.27 (4H, m), 6.00 (1H, br s), 3.38 (3H, s), 3.01 (2H, m), 2.20 (3H, s), 2.01 (3H, s), 1.70 (6H, m), 1.61 (6H, s), 1.37 (2H, m).
