Procedure

To a suspension of 4-piperidone monohydrate hydrochloride (2.0 g, 13 mmol) and K2CO3 (9.0 g, 65.2 mmol) in acetone (40 ml) was added methanesulfonyl chloride (5.96 g, 52.1 mmol) at 0-5° C. The mixture was stirred at 25° C. for 24 h. The solid material was removed by filtration, and the filtrate was concentrated to dryness. The residue was purified by flash chromatography (silica gel, 80% ether in hexanes) to afford the desired ketone (1.20 g, 52%) as a colorless solid. mp 102-104° C.; 1H NMR (500 MHz, CDCl3) δ2.58 (t, J=6.4 Hz, 4H), 2.90 (s, 3H), 3.60 (t, J=6.4 Hz, 4H).
