Ethyl 7-(4-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)phenoxy)-6,8-dichlorochroman-4-carboxylate (45.1 g, 96.5 mmol) was dissolved in dichloromethane (500 ml). Trifluoroacetic acid (100 ml) was added slowly to the solution. The mixture was stirred for 2 hours at ambient temperature. The crude mixture was concentrated and the residue was dissolved in EtOAc (500 ml). The EtOAc solution was washed with saturated NaHCO3 (3×100 ml) and brine (250 ml), dried over MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated to provide 40.3 g of the title compound as a light brown solid (102%).
