A 100-mL round-bottomed flask equipped with a reflux condenser was charged with 4,4-dimethyl-1,10-diazatricyclo[6.4.0.02,6]dodeca-2(6),7-dien-9-one 107e (612 mg, 3.0 mmol), 4-bromo-2-chloronicotinaldehyde (2.0 g, 9.0 mmol), Pd2(dba)3 (275 mg, 0.30 mmol), XantPhos (347 mg, 0.60 mmol), cesium carbonate (1.95 g, 6.0 mmol), and 1,4-dioxane (30 mL). After three cycles of vacuum/nitrogen flush, the mixture was heated at 97° C. overnight. It was then cooled to room temperature and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure and the resulting residue was purified by silica-gel column chromatography eluting with 1:2 ethyl acetate/petroleum ether to afford 329a as a yellow solid (660 mg, 65%). MS-ESI: [M+H]+ 344.1.
