To 0.82 g of sodium methylate in 20 ml of DMF a solution of 4-[2-(2,5-dimethyl-phenyl)-acetylamino]-1-methoxy-piperidine-4-carboxylic acid methyl ester in 10 ml DMF is added at a temperature of 60° C. After stirring for 3 h at 60° C. the reaction mixture is evaporated. The residue is diluted with 10 ml water, neutralized with 10% hydrochloric acid and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase is dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated to give 3-(2,5-dimethyl-phenyl)-4-hydroxy-8-methoxy-1,8-diaza-spiro[4.5]dec-3-en-2-one as a light brown resin. This material is triturated with diethyl ether/hexane, filtered and dried to afford a solid, mp: 176-177° C.
