Procedure
To an EtOH (25 mL) solution of tert-butyl 4-{4-[2-(4-fluorophenoxy)ethyl]-benzyl}piperazine-1-carboxylate (2.36 g) was added 6 M HCl (9.49 mL) at room temperature. After stirring at 40° C. for 3 hours, the solvent was removed under reduced pressure. The resulting precipitate was collected by filtration, and dissolved in water. The solution was alkalified with 5 M NaOH, and extracted with CH2Cl2. The organic layer was washed with saturated aqueous NaCl, dried over anhydrous MgSO4, and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford 1-{4-[2-(4-fluorophenoxy)ethyl]benzyl}piperazine as a colorless oil (1.47 g).
