Procedure
A solution of 6-methoxy-1H-indole (100.0 g, 679.0 mmol) in DMF (560 mL) was cooled to −78° C. and treated with chlorosulfonyl isocyanate (71 mL, 815 mmol). After the addition the reaction mixture was stirred for 1 hour. The dark solution was poured into ice water (2 L) and the light brown solid was collected by filtration, washed with additional water and dried to afford 6-methoxy-1H-indole-3-carbonitrile as a light brown solid (104.8 g, 90%).
