Procedure

To a stirred suspension of 0.62 g (0.013 mol) of 50% sodium hydride (in mineral oil), which had been washed with hexanes, in 20 mls dry dimethylformamide cooled to -5° under nitrogen was added dropwise 1.6 g (0.013 mol) benzyl mercaptan such that the temperature was maintained below 5°. The suspension was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour, cooled to 0°, and a solution of 2.0 g (0.012 mol) of the product from Example 1 was added dropwise while maintaining the temperature between 0° and 5°. After warming to room temperature, the solution was poured into water and extracted with ether. The combined organic layers were washed with water and with brine, dried over magnesium sulfate, and evaporated to an oil which was purified by flash chromatography to afford 0.9 g (27%) oil: NMR (CDCl3, 200 MHz), 1.02 (3H, t, J=7 Hz), 1.6 (2H, m), 2.9 (2H, t, J=7 Hz), 4.45 (2H, s), 6.9-7.6 (7H, m), 8.3 (1H, m); IR (neat) 1560, 1370 cm-1.
