A mixture of 1.0 g of 5-[4-(6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchroman-2-ylmethoxy)benzyl]thiazolidine -2,4-dione (prepared as described in Example 28), 0.31 g of succinic anhydride and 1 ml of pyridine was allowed to stand overnight at room temperature. The reaction mixture was then washed 3 times, each time with 10 ml of cyclohexane, and the insoluble residue obtained was purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluted by mixtures of benzene and ethyl acetate ranging from 5:1 to 1:1) to give the title compound melting at 197°-202° C.
