A mixture of 1.0 g of t-butyl α-{5-[4-(6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchroman-2-ylmethoxy)benzyl ]-2,4-dioxothiazolidin-3-yl}acetate (prepared as described in Example 46) and 10 ml of a 4N dioxane solution of hydrogen chloride was allowed to stand at room temperature overnight. At the end of this time, the solvent was distilled off and the residue was washed with water to give the title compound as a pale yellow powder, softening at 85°-90° C.
