To a mixture of 34.7 g of the 2'-hydroxy-4',6'-dimethoxyacetophenone obtained in Production Example 7, 25.3 g of p-anisaldehyde, 150 ml of ethanol and 150 ml of dimethylsulfoxide was added 150 ml of a saturated solution of potassium hydroxide in ethanol at 0° C., and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 4 hours to effect reaction. After the reaction, the reaction mixture was made acidic by dilute hydrochloric acid to obtain a precipitate. The precipitate was washed with water and recrystallized from a mixed solvent of methanol and ethyl acetate to obtain 43.4 g (yield=78.4%) of 2'-hydroxy-4,4',6'-trimethoxychalcone in the form of a yellow needle.
