Procedure

A mixture of dimethyl 1,2-dimethyl-4,5-benzimidazoledicarboxylate (1.70 g, 6.49 mmol) and 2N sodium hydroxide (25 mL, 12.5 mmol) is stirred for 5 hours at 100° C. The mixture is cooled, acidified to pH 4 with hydrochloric acid and filtered to afford the title product as a white powder (1.32 g, 86.8%), mp 305°-308° C. (dec).
