A 3,000 ml two-necked flask equipped with a stirrer and a reflux condenser was charged with 500 ml of thionyl chloride and 277 g of 4-n-decyloxybenzoic acid obtained by a conventional method, and stirred together with 0.1 g of dimethylformamide at room temperature over one night. Thereafter, the mixture was heated for 1 hour under reflux. Then, unreacted thionyl chloride was removed under reduced pressure to obtain 293 g of 4-decyloxybenzoyl chloride as a colorless to yellow oily product (yield: 99%, boiling point: 175° to 180° C./0.5 mmHg).
