2-(2-Hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)-2H-benzotriazole (74.3 g, 0.33 mol), diethylamine (37.0 g, 0.51 mol) and paraformaldehyde (17.1 g) are dissolved in 85 mL of n-butanol. The mixture is heated with agitation at reflux (95° to 100° C.) for 44 hours. The solvent is removed by vacuum distillation, and the product, a yellow viscous liquid, is obtained in high yield (>99%). This Mannich base is identified by thin layer chromatography using toluene as the mobile phase.
