A solution N-trifluoroacetyl-1,4-dimethyl-7-methoxy-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-3-benzazepine (0.452 g, 1.50 mmol) in acetonitrile (20 mL) was treated with N-bromosuccinimide (0.294 g, 1.65 mmol) and stirred overnight at 20° C. The product mixture was diluted with EtOAc (100 mL), washed with sodium bisulfite (50 mL) and brine (50 mL), dried with Na2SO4 and concentrated. Flash chromatography (20% EtOAc in hexane, silica) resulted in a clear oil. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3, mixture of rotamers) δ 7.32 (s, 1H), 6.62 (m, 1H), 4.37 (m, 1H), 3.87 (s, 3H), 3.81 (m, 1H), 3.28-3.10 (m, 3H), 2.73 (m, 1H), 1.31 (m, 3H), 1.25 (m, 3H).
