To a solution of 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)malondialdehyde (797 mg, 4.48 mmol, 1 eq) in 20 ml of ethanol are added m-anisidine (551 mg, 4.48 mmol, 1 eq) and 10 ml of conc. HCl. The reaction mixture is stirred at 80° C. for 3 days, and after cooling to RT, the reaction is stopped by adding a 10% sodium carbonate solution. The mixture is extracted with dichloromethane, and the organic phase is dried over MgSO4, filtered, and the solvent is removed in vacuum on a rotary evaporator. After purification by column chromatography with hexane/ethyl acetate as the eluent, the product was obtained in a yield of 19% (221 mg).
