Following the procedure used to prepare 3-iodo-7-methyl-2-phenyl-7H-pyrano[2,3-c]pyridine-4,8-dione, 3-iodo-2-phenyl-7H-pyrano[2,3-c]pyridine-4,8-dione was reacted with 2-bromoethanol to give the title compound (45.2 mg, 81%) as a white solid. 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6): δ 7.76-7.73 (m, 2H), 7.65 (d, J=7.3 Hz, 1H), 7.62-7.58 (m, 3H), 6.64 (d, J=7.3 Hz, 1H), 4.93 (t, J=5.5 Hz, 1H), 4.06 (t, J=5.4 Hz, 2H), 3.67 (q, J=5.4 Hz, 211).
