Procedure
To a solution of 7-Methoxy-8-nitro-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-benzo[d]azepine (0.15 g, 0.00067 mol), Acetone (0.10 mL, 0.0014 mol), Acetic acid (0.1 mL, 0.002 mol) and Methanol (10 mL, 0.2 mol) was added Sodium cyanoborohydride (50 mg, 0.0008 mol). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 4 hours. The reaction mixture was evaporated and the residue was partitioned between water (20 mL) and dichloromethane (20 mL). The organic layers were dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and evaporated. The mixture was purified via silica gel chromatography using amine modified silica gel 10%→100% Ethyl Acetate:Hexane solvent gradient. 3-Isopropyl-7-methoxy-8-nitro-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-benzo[d]azepine isolated as a yellow oil.
