Procedure
A solution of ethyl 2-formyl-1-cyclopropanecarboxylate (predominately trans, 331 μL, 2.5 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (5 mL) was cooled down to −70° C. Ethynylmagnesium bromide (0.5 M in tetrahydrofuran, 5 mL, 2.5 mmol) was added to the above solution under an atmosphere of nitrogen dropwise, and stirred at −70° C. for 1 h. The reaction was quenched with water, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase was washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated to get 419 mg of the title compound (yield 100%, unpurified) as a pale yellow oil.
