Procedure
N-methylaniline (2.88 ml, 26.6 mmol) was added to a solution of ethyl 2-bromo-2-phenylacetate (4.65 ml, 26.6 mmol) in acetonitrile (55 ml). The reaction was heated in sealed tube under microwave irradiation at 100° C. for 30 minutes. Acetonitrile was evaporated, residue was taken up with EtOAc and washed sequentially with 1N NaHCO3, 1N HCl and brine. The organic phase was dried over Na2SO4, filtered and evaporated to dryness. The residue was triturated with hexane and then purified by flash chromatography (Petroleum ether/EtOAc=97/3) to obtain ethyl 2-(methyl(phenyl)amino)-2-phenylacetate (4.6 g, 64.3% yield).
