A 100 mL round bottom flask was charged with tert-butyl 4-(5-bromo-3-((1-(dimethylamino)ethylidene)amino)pyrazin-2-yl)piperazine-1-carboxylate (2.8 g, 6.6 mmol) and methanol (25 mL). To the above solution was added hydroxylamine hydrochloride (0.76 g, 10.9 mmol) in one portion. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 16 h. Work-up: the solvent was evaporated. The resulting crystalline solid was washed with water and collected by filtration. The solid was washed with ethanol (100 mL) and dried, to afford 2.3 g (84%) of the product as a white solid.
