A solution of 1,1-dimethylethyl 2-(((4-(methoxycarbonyl)phenylmethyl)(methyl)amino)methyl)piperidine-1-carboxylate in dichloromethane (6 mL) was treated with a solution of 4 N hydrochloric acid in dioxane (6 mL). The reaction was stirred overnight. Solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the product, methyl 4-((methyl(piperidin-2-ylmethyl)amino)methyl)benzoate, was isolated as the hydrochloride salt.
