To a stirred solution of 5-hydroxy-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-one (0.74 g, 5.0 mmol) in toluene (30 mL) at room temperature was added diisopropyl azodicarboxylate (1.21 g, 6.0 mmol), 1-(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)piperidin-4-ol (1.47 g, 6.0 mmol), and triphenyl phosphine (1.57 g, 6.0 mmol). The mixture was stirred at 60° C. overnight and then concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue obtained was purified by flash chromatography (silica gel, ethyl acetate/hexanes=1/1) to afford the title compound as a pale yellow solid (1.49 g, 79%). 1H-NMR (CDCl3, 300 MHz): δ 7.70 (m, 1H), 7.49 (m, 2H), 6.93 (m, 4H), 4.65 (m, 1H), 3.59 (m, 2H), 3.30 (m, 2H), 3.09 (m, 2H), 2.68 (m, 2H), 2.12 (m, 2H), 1.96 (m, 2H) ppm; MS (ESI): 376.6 (M+1).
