Procedure
A mixture of 4-acetylbenzoic acid methyl ester (1.0 g, 5.6 mmol), hydroxylamine hydrochloride (3.1 g, 45 mmol) and sodium acetate (3.7 g, 45 mmol) in methanol (50 mL) was heated at 40° C. for 2 hours. The mixture was evaporated to dryness and the residue partitioned between EtOAc (40 mL) and water (40 mL). The organic layer was washed with brine (40 mL), dried over anhydrous MgSO4 and evaporated to dryness to afford the title compound as a white solid (1.04 g, 96%). LC-MS: (FA) ES+ 194; 1H NMR (400 MHz, MeOD) δ 8.02-7.98 (m, 2H), 7.78-7.75 (m, 2H), 3.90 (s, 3H), 2.24 (s, 3H).
